 6 Warning Signs of Impacted Wisdom Tooth 

Wisdom tooth, as the name says, doesn’t make you smart. These are the additional pair of molars that usually come in the late ’20s and have no real purpose. Wisdom teeth are in the back of your mouth that usually aren’t problematic but can create one if the mouth has no room for them. Wisdom teeth are the last adult teeth in an individual that completes the set of 32 adult teeth. They are the final set of molars that develop at the back of the mouth. 

There is a possibility that an individual doesn’t get ant wisdom teeth or may get somewhere around 1-4 teeth and it varies from person to person. When a tooth has no space to emerge normally, then it called the impacted tooth.

What are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the tooth that does not emerge naturally. Sometimes the teeth may grow into the jaw causing pains and impacted Wisdom teeth. These teeth are usually used for the raw and fibrous food we used to eat in the past. However, our diet nowadays consists of softer foods and these wisdom teeth do not serve any purpose. If the wisdom teeth fail to develop all the way through the gum line, it can cause impacted wisdom teeth that are confined between the jawbone and gum tissue.

Symptoms for Impacted Wisdom teeth

The impacted wisdom teeth can lead to several dental problems however, it gets unnoticed till the issue gets severe. The impacted wisdom tooth usually does not show up symptoms but there are warnings that might you may experience when you have the issue:

  • Swollen gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Tender gums
  • Swelling at the jaw
  • Jaw pain at the back of the mouth
  • Bad breath
  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • Difficulty in opening the mouth or chewing

Treatment of an Impacted wisdom tooth

Impacted wisdom teeth are usually prone to develop pericoronitis. It refers to the gum pain and infection caused due to a partially erupted wisdom tooth. It can lead to swelling gum and other oral issues. In addition to pericoronitis, there are several other signs of problems, a wisdom tooth may show cysts, and tumors, damage to adjacent teeth, cavities, and other oral problems. If the impacted wisdom tooth is not removed, it may cause problems and infections later on, and hence is advisable to remove them if affected. Some of the cases when treatments are carried are:

  • Dry Socket: Dry socket is most commonly found post-extraction or surgery of wisdom teeth. Socket refers to the hole left in the bone while the tooth extraction process. There is a blood clot over the holes, protecting the nerves and bones below, However, the clot is removed. If t is not removed, it may leave an intense pain in the nerves as well as the socket.
  • Partially erupted wisdom tooth: There is a need for removal of wisdom tooth if the tooth has partially erupted through the gingival tissue and may cause inflammation or infection. This is called a partially erupted wisdom tooth and needs immediate removal through the surgical or non-surgical extraction process.
  • Broken Wisdom tooth: Broken or chipped wisdom teeth comes with a necessity for treatment. If the broken wisdom tooth is left untreated it may cause a crack or a hole that leads to bacteria and decay. Swelling around the broken tooth, fever, and throbbing pain are symptoms of a broken wisdom tooth.
  • Impacted wisdom tooth cutting into the cheek: This refers to the crowded wisdom tooth or growth of the wisdom tooth sideways towards the cheek. The food and bacteria get stuck in the wisdom tooth leading to decay and gum infections. This may also lead to ulcers in the cheek.
  • Wisdom tooth decay: If a wisdom tooth is partially impacted it may have the risk of tooth decay. It is seen when the food and bacteria stuck in the teeth and are difficult to clean. It is best suggested to removing the decay and fixing wisdom teeth with root canals, fillings, or crowns.
