Temporary Anchoring Device

Temporary Anchoring Devices (or TAD’s) are small metal screws that are inserted into the jawbone. Your orthodontist then uses them as “anchors” to help move teeth. They are eventually removed, and sometimes are replaced with another TAD in a different locaorthodontist feels that another vector, or direction, of orthodontic force is needed to move teeth further.

If you have been referred to our office to have a (or multiple) TAD(s) placed, this process with start with a Consultation/Examination appointment with our doctor. In most cases a 3-Dimensional x-ray will be taken at this appointment in order to determine the best placement of the TAD in relation to the surrounding teeth roots. This specialized x-ray shows us precisely how much bone is available to place TAD(s) and helps prevent potential complications.
