Bone Grafting for Dental Implants

What is Bone Grafting?

“Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that uses transplanted bone to repair and rebuild diseased or damaged bones. A bone graft is a choice for repairing bones almost anywhere in your body. Your surgeon might take bone from your hips, legs, or ribs to perform the graft. Sometimes, surgeons also use bone tissue donated from cadavers to perform bone grafting.”

Bone Loss in the Jaw

When there is bone loss in the jaw, it means losing teeth along with the bone. It could severely lead to changes in facial appearance and loss of gum tissue. While dentists perform bone grafting procedures to stimulate new bone growth at the missing tooth location, it is best when done immediately after tooth extraction.

Let’s look at how bone grafting is done

The most common sources for bone grafts are the patient himself, another person, an animal or artificial material. When the donor tissue is taken from another person or an animal, this is thoroughly treated for purification and sterilization. The graft provides a platform for the neighboring bone to grow upon; and eventually, the new bone will replace the graft material. The grafting procedure may include covering the graft with collagen membranes that help in the regeneration or use of a synthetic material that promotes healing. The procedure involves materials that are eventually absorbed by the body.

When opting for a grafting procedure there are many things to be considered. The grafting procedure will depend on the location where it is needed, the degree of bone loss and how much has passed since tooth loss. When grafting is done immediately after tooth loss, it limits further bone loss and is easier for any future dental implant procedure. When the tooth has been missing for some time, the procedure involves making an incision in the gum tissue, placing the graft with any other membranes and then stitching the incision closed. This is a slightly longer procedure and is performed with local anesthesia. I

There are many procedures involved and this really depends upon where the grafting is required. The procedures may vary depending upon the requirement such as saving the teeth from gum – diseases and repairing them after trauma and injury. There are many different types of drafting procedures that Your Oral surgeon will discuss with you.

After any bone grafting procedure, the patient may feel discomfort that will last for a few days. The dentists usually prescribe anti-inflammatory, non-steroidal medications such as ibuprofen and as a precaution against infection; an antibiotic may also be prescribed.

Post-operative care is similar to any minor dental procedural care

Ensure timely follow-up with regular check-ups and appointments. Since the stitches or staples need to be removed a week or so after your surgery, another visit is a must. Your doctor may want to perform a series of X-rays to see how well your bone heals. Follow all instructions carefully to have the best chance at a full recovery.

Why bone grafting is a popular restorative choice suggested by dentists

While the primary purpose of bone grafting remains to stop a patient’s accelerated bone loss, bone grafting is a great choice for cosmetic dentistry—dental implants. Since their introduction, dental implants are the preferred choice real appearance, resilience and practicality when compared with other tooth replacement options. Lor

A well designed and executed bone grafting procedure will ensure the tooth functions properly and appears natural. When done by a professional team, dental implants become indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Apart from restoring the facial structure and the cosmetic features of a person, bone grafting holds benefit to the bone health too. Let us look at how they actually improve health.
